Cardiometabolic and venous disease forum: the patient takes centre stage

Cardiometabolic diseases are the biggest burden in terms of disability and mortality for global population and will increase over 10 years, despite the availability of very effective drugs that have curbed cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. However, the ageing population together with the increased survival from acute cardiovascular events project a progressive increase in the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases.

Furthermore, multimorbidity and the ageing of the population lead to polypharmacy that is one of the major causes of poor adherence. More recently the hyper-specialisation of physicians has led to focusing on single diseases rather than considering a holistic patient approach. Therefore, a cross-area approach and the holistic management are the most important gaps in medical education, and in the management of multimorbid patients.

This forum addressed the main challenges of cardiometabolic diseases and their possible solutions through a discussion with HCPs, companies, and regulatory affairs experts. Participants received an update on the current management of patients with cardiovascular disease according to the European Guidelines, expanding the discussion to include medication adherence and solutions to polypharmacy.
